Why Couples Therapy?
All relationships can benefit from couples therapy as it helps to build long-lasting respect and affection. It provides space for couples to learn better understanding of self, each other and the relationship dynamic; it also helps strengthen connection between partners.
There are also times of difficulty in our personal relationships, where therapy can be utilised to work through complex or recurring issues. If you are experiencing repeated conflict over the same issues, escalation in fights, feel unable to discuss your emotions or concerns, feel distant, or are spending less time together – couples counselling may be an option worth your consideration.
This can help with:
- – Finding better understanding of the struggles, challenges, needs and fears in your relationship.
- – Managing conflict without compromising honesty.
- – Addressing addictions and/or problematic patterns of behaviour (e.g. outbursts, shutdown, withdrawal, avoidance through increased socialising or gym attendance or work).
- – Building intimacy and more satisfying connection.
- – Establishing healthy boundaries in your relationship.
- – Finding ways to communicate effectively.
- – Navigating difficult transitions in life such as childbirth, children moving out of the home, divorce, re-partnering, blended families.
- – Addressing sexual problems.
- – Addressing infidelity, affairs and betrayals.

Generally speaking, the process involves:
1. Assessment

2. Setting Goals
Together with your therapist, you’ll talk about specific goals for therapy and go over what each partner hopes to achieve.
3. Tailored Strategies
Therapy for couples provides a structured and supportive environment for partners to address and resolve relationship problems, using strategies created for your unique situation and needs.
If you’re facing difficulties in your relationship or seeking to enhance your partnership, therapy and couples counselling can offer valuable tools and support to achieve a healthier, more satisfying relationship.

FAQs about Couples Therapy
Is this covered by Medicare?
Unfortunately, Mental Health Care Plans as covered by Medicare are for individuals only and not for couples counselling / marriage counselling or therapy. You will not be able to claim a Medicare rebate for these services.
If you have private health insurance you may be able to claim, depending on what your cover allows.
Do I need a referral for couples / marriage counselling?
No, you do not need a referral from a GP or any other professional. You can self refer for couples counselling at any time. Why not contact our team, or book a spot online to get started.
Is it worth going to relationship counselling?
Absolutely. Counselling and psychotherapy creates a safe space for:
- – Open communication
- – Issue identification and resolution
- – Learning more effective communication strategies
All of which can help you build toward a healthier, more satisfying partnership.
How many sessions are needed for couples therapy?
Just as no relationship is the same, no therapeutic journey will be either. Your Interposa professional will work together with you during the initial stages to identify your goals and suggest how many sessions they think may be needed.
Often, couples will address pressing issues first. They may then re-attend at a later time to continue the work to resolve other areas of the relationship.
How long are couples sessions?
Interposa’s regular sessions are 50 minutes or up to one (1) hour. However, there are situations where a longer time allowance may be more helpful.
To ensure adequate space for complex issues in relationship counselling, your therapist may suggest a longer time of up to 90 minutes – this will be arranged when scheduling your next couples appointment.
