A psychologist diagnoses mental health disorders and illnesses. Whereas a psychiatrist is a medical doctor who prescribes medication.
A counsellor is a person trained to give guidance and typically deals with present issues that can be resolved on a conscious level, this is generally a short-term consultation.
A psychotherapist is a practitioner who recognises and treats mental health disorders with attention to the cause of symptoms whilst intensively and extensively examines a person’s psychological history. This is a longer term, more in-depth treatment.
This is not to say these are completely different from one another, there is overlap and extensive similarities, these are just the nuanced differences between each.
Each session is 50 minutes long, although this can extend to an hour depending on the state of the client during this time.
