Understanding Depression
Depression is a common mental health disorder characterised by continual feelings of low mood, sadness, hopelessness, and a lack of interest or enjoyment in daily activities. It can affect thoughts, behaviours, emotions, and physical health. For some, depression can be a result of:
- • Childhood trauma or family experiences
- • Separation, divorce, or breakdown of a close relationship
- • Loss of a loved one
- • Serious illness or disability
There may also be a genetic disposition for some (family history). For others still, there may seem to be no clear link at first.
Experiencing feelings of sadness, loneliness, anger and stress are normal. If these feelings persist longer than a week, or come and go frequently, you should contact Interposa or your GP. Making the first call or booking in is often the hardest part; from there we provide a safe, confidential space for your concerns.
Interposa’s Therapeutic Approach
The focus of therapy with Interposa is not on stopping your feelings, but on understanding and integrating them. This involves gaining insight into the underlying causes of the depression, processing ambivalent or painful emotions (like grief, anger, or shame), and creating a narrative that makes sense of the depressive experience — allowing for emotional growth.
Psychodynamic Psychotherapy
Many therapists practice Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to help identify and change negative thought patterns and behaviours — but this approach means these patterns can return later, as repressed and unresolved feelings start to re-present.
Interposa takes a psychodynamic psychotherapy approach. This aims to address the root causes of the problem, not just symptoms. This is usually a longer-term therapy that focuses on:
- • Uncovering unconscious conflicts and repressed emotions that may be rooted in early attachment experiences or traumatic relationships.
- • Understanding the internalised critical voice (often tied to early caregivers).
- • Working through loss, grief, and unresolved anger – which are often masked as depression.
- • Enhancing your ability to form healthier relationships and build a more coherent sense of self.
In this way, the treatment is personalised and offers an opportunity to gain insight into underlying issues and develop a deeper understanding of emotions and relationships. This supports long-term healing and prevents likelihood of relapse.
More Than Just ‘Coping’ with Depression
Psychodynamic psychotherapy doesn’t emphasise “coping skills” in the way cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) might, but it does encourage:
- • Insight development: Becoming more aware of how past experiences and unconscious patterns influence current moods and relationships.
- • Affective expression: Learning to express and tolerate difficult emotions rather than suppressing them.
- • Therapeutic relationship: Using the therapist-client relationship as a corrective emotional experience, which helps you to revise internal working models of self and others.

FAQs about Treating Depression
How do I know if I have depression?
The experience and symptoms can vary for everyone. Common signs of depression include fatigue, changes in sleep and appetite, difficulty concentrating, general unhappiness affecting daily life and relationships.
What are the best treatments for depression?
Medications to treat depression (like SSRIs) prescribed by your GP may be used alongside therapy.
Many therapists utilise Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to help identify and change negative thought patterns and behaviours — however these symptoms often return later as the psyche re-presents repressed and unresolved feelings.
That is why our therapeutic approach to depression is delivered through a psychodynamic psychotherapy lense. This focuses on uncovering unconscious processes, unresolved conflicts (often from early life experiences), and the influence of interpersonal relationships.
Do I need a referral for therapy to treat depression?
No, you do not need a referral from a GP or any other professional to access Interposa’s therapy services for depression . Why not contact our team, or book a spot online to get started.
Is it worth going to therapy for depression?
Absolutely. Therapy creates a safe space where you can understand and explore the root of your depression by exploring past experiences, and how these may be shaping your current thoughts, feelings and behaviours.
How many therapy sessions are needed for depression?
Your Interposa therapist will work with you during the initial stages to identify your goals and suggest how many sessions they think may be needed. Typically these sessions will address pressing issues first, then work with you to resolve other areas.
How long are Interposa therapy sessions?
Interposa’s regular therapy sessions are 50 minutes or up to one (1) hour, depending on the state of the client at this time.
